Dear Marcus,

I'm an Italian Graphic Designer,

my design firm since 1993, create, produces and sell all over the globe the 3D pop-up postcards with monuments of the World.

We've started two years ago "green politics and strategies" searching recycled papers and trying to reduce wasting of paper.

I'll be at the FESPA in Amsterdam the 13th...
See you in RAI!

Roland - please come to the Planet Friendly Debate - we would like your involvement and we have our TV crew there and they would like to take a comment from you for the piece we are filming on planet friendly. You will also see the new Planet Friendly Guide and get to have some planet friendly beer and sandwiches - this goes for anyone who signs up to attend and makes it to our stand! See you there and sign up on the Events function on the Wide Network for Planet Friendly Debate 13th May 13.30.

That's a good response to what I said, Roland -- and you are coming from a 'greener' environment than many. I've said several times over the years that end buyers of digital print are normally only interested in three things -- that the job is produced on time, to the set price and at an acceptable quality. Beyond those criteria most don't really care how their order has been produced -- if children with wax crayons can meet those criteria, then so be it -- bring it on.

So … now is the time to educate all the people who determine much of today's printed output and they, in turn, can ensure that everyone knows the growing choice of options -- in your case, that would be digital textiles.

It's accepted that print buyers, specifiers and so on are buying an overall service, and not necessarily a type of print. The 'green' element is one of those rare factors which, now, can make a difference. What has to happen is that we need to knit together all the people and processes involved, and that's not so easy.

How do we achieve this?

Hello All,

As I said before: I think education about 'being green' and 'application possibilities' is key in today's printing industry. Not just the marketing and the sales pitch, but real figures and real examples. On top of that, Sophie's point extends to this: if one doesn't know what the possibilities are, they can't really compare. What is green? What products are available? What is the maximum level of quality? Does that fit the economics? Manufacturers need to educate and support, print production companies need to enlarge their horizon, print buyers need to see more and better applications.

@ Marcus: I will probably be very busy at the show and won't be able to attend the debates. It would be good to have the debates as video archive. I'd love to see the response of the industry to the debate.

Good luck with Fespa TV. If we can assist, we will gladly do so.

Gr.Roland.

Not only do we need printers to join the "Green and Credit Debates" but their customers views would be very welcome. Do you think it wiil be possible to engage any of the leading digital print buyers/users in discussion? If so I would love to be there to hear their views.

That is a very interesting point Sophie and one that to me seems to come down to education of both camps. One perhaps needs to adjust its marketing and the other needs, and will in my mind be forced to open its eyes to alternative products and solutions. The current market is I'm sure forcing more creative thought processes, but the industry must be fleet of foot to adapt. Perhaps we will see this kind of comment come out in our TV interviews this year? Speaking as someone from 'outside' the printing industry I would be interested to hear if this is a common observation from members.

We have a wealth of businesses who've invested heavily in production equipment on the one hand, and we have brand owners and other potential customers on the other. But, as I know I've said before, there's a huge gap between the two. Many users of wide-format printers can do more with them than many end customers realise; print buyers and agencies are really only purchasing results and lots of them don't understand about the versatility and economics of using digital. There's a massive gap between print service providers and the buyers -- how do we fill it?
